‘Come in,’ Logan said, his throat felt as if it had turned to concrete and his Adam’s apple a block of steel three sizes too big.

Logan, the other one, walked in and gave Courtney a dispassionate look. Logan checked his body double over. Nothing out of place. Same clothes, same hair, same expression on his face that clearly said that he wanted to be anywhere but there.

Beth came into full view and he did a double take.

Dressed in her favourite black jeans, with a matching black cashmere sweater and knee-high boots, her hair was pulled tight into a ponytail.

Damn, he thought, how did I never notice how beautiful my wife was?

‘Thank you for coming in today,’ he said, as he knew Courtney always did at the commencement of the session. ‘How are you both going?’

His heart was beating against his chest so hard he felt the need to take a deep breath and hope to hell he survived the next fifty-nine minutes without doing something he couldn’t undo.

‘Good,’ Logan’s one word response said it all.

‘As expected,’ Beth countered her husband’s lame response.

It was all he could do to not stare at her, but he cleared his throat. He had a plan.

‘I want to do something different today,’

The other Logan blinked in disinterest.

Christ, he thought. Is this the one expression I always have on my face?

Beth sat forward, appearing interested.

‘I would like to spend a little time with you both, one on one,’ he said.

Logan noted the scowl on his other self’s face. Clearly he didn’t like the sound of that idea.

‘What the hell for?’

Beth turned and gave her husband a sideways glare before returning her face to the counsellor’s.

‘If you think it will help,’ she said.

Courtney smiled.

‘Logan,’ he smiled in Beth’s direction, ‘you first. Beth, go have a short break in the waiting room. Tindwer will make you a coffee if you like.’

Beth rose from the couch, giving her husband a bemused look, which he didn’t reciprocate, before reaching the office door and closing it behind her.

‘Well,’ the other Logan said, sitting back on the couch with an annoyed look on his face, ‘what do you want to talk about, Courtney?’

Logan bristled but then smiled warmly.

‘Logan, how long have you been coming to see me?’

The car salesman shrugged his shoulders and pursed his lips.

‘About 4800 dollars long at least.’

Could the shmuck be more sarcastic? Jesus.

‘Can I be honest with you then?’ Logan asked.

His doppelgänger leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees. His avoidance was starting to grate on Logan.

‘You need to decide.’ His tone became serious.

Before the other Logan could respond, he sat forward and shook his head.

‘On what?’

‘Whether you should stop wasting your time, Beth’s time and quite frankly, my bloody time.’

Logan was stunned by the counsellor’s forwardness.

As he began to speak, she cut him off and gestured to the waiting room.

‘-I don’t care about the money. I have more than I need and more clients than I have time for. So, your choice is this—’ Logan
